The Baldcypress is a non-flowering, woody plant that is a member of the Cupressaceae family, noting that the species mostly grows in medium to wet soil types and is native to the Southeastern United States. The Taxodium distichum have been identified as being producers of chemicals, that is, various essentials oils, which can be used for an array of purposes that include the treatment of medical conditions as well as the preservation of food. (Al-Sayed 2018) The plant is widely cultivated and used for a diverse of range of ecological purposes throughout the nation, such as in landscaping to prevent erosion as well as for enhancing soil fertility. (Al-Sayed 2018) Notably, phytochemicals, such as cytotoxic abietane-type diterpenes, has been extracted from the leaves of the Baldcypress and have been used for the antimicrobial properties against different types of bacteria. (Al-Sayed 2018) Therefore, Tradescantia spathacea, though widely cultivated for ecological purposes, sequester chemical substances in the leaves of the plant that can be used toward inhibit bacterial development and growth.
