Common Bottlenose Dolphin

Tursiops truncatus

In the Adelaide region 2

Near indistinguishable from the Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphin and the two species are often confused, this one is usually found in deeper waters. Usually found offshore but may come near the coast in areas such as Victor Harbor and Encounter Bay. The population in Gulf St Vincent (along with several other populations in Victoria and Tasmania) may be part of a new species, Tursiops australis or the Burrunan Bottlenose Dolphin, but this has not been universally accepted.
