Eastern Short-beaked Echidna

Tachyglossus aculeatus aculeatus

In the Adelaide region 2

Can be diurnal or nocturnal depending on the weather conditions. Common in any suitable habitat, but not often seen. Prefers areas with groundcover, usually absent from city suburbs. Extremely distinctive and unlikely to be confused with any other local mammal, only surviving monotreme in the region after the extirpation of the Platypus.
