August

Summary 4

Pricklypoppy is an annual or biennial herb that produces a sparingly prickly single stem (2 – 20 inches tall). It is native in Colorado. Leaves are 7-20 cm long alternate, prickly only on the veins, glaucous and somewhat succulent. Flowers are white and showy, 5-10cm wide with 6 petals and 150+ stamens. Fruit is a 30-44mm long densely prickled capsule. Capsules are narrowly to broadly ellipsoid. This plant blooms June through August.

Uses 3

Crested prickly poppy is a drought tolerant plant with low levels of palatability for animals and livestock, making it a good plant to vegetate prairie dog towns.

Seed Collection and Processing 3

The seed pods are covered in spines. They open when ripe, to let the small, hard black seeds shake out and scatter. To collect, gently shake seed pods over an envelope.

Probable Locations 3

Crested pricklypoppy is found in sandy soil of dry grasslands and open slopes, often found along roadsides, 3700-8000 ft. It is found in the plains, foothills and on mesa tops. It is a drought tolerant species adapted to medium and course textured soils.
