August-October
Perennial forb from rather deep rootstalks; stems cespitose from the crown, simple or branching infrequently below ground level, relatively slender leaves. Inflorescences contain many small clustered white and pink flowers.
Plains milkweed is a good pollinator species and larval host plant for monarch butterflies. It is generally avoided by prairie dogs. It adds diversity to the system.
Seeds are found in the ripe pods on the plant. Pods can be broken open easily. Be careful to not let the seeds blow away in the wind.
Plains milkweed grows on dry sites on the plains and lower foothills. Plants are usually less than 12 inches tall. Leafy stems have a bottle brush appearance. Flowers are white or pink and are in umbels at the tip of the stem. Fruits are held upright and are 1.5 to 2.5 inches tall.
