Leaves/stem: leaves reduced to a sheath that surrounds stem with 4 to 14 black/brown teeth at the top, stem has small central cavity, branches are solid (not hollow) and 3 or 4 angled
Spores: Fertile stems identified by ½ to ½-inch, blunt-tipped cone at tip, stout flesh-colored stem, and lack of branches
Fruiting season: early-mid spring
Height: 6-24 inches
Habitat: ditches, roadsides, moist woods
