Leaves/stem: evergreen, leave linear, medium green, toothless, and lacking a hair-like or spine-like tip. Horizontal stems run underground, at regular intervals erect shoots emerge, each with 2 to several fanning horizontal branches and appearing tree-like
Spores: spike-like or cone-like structures (strobili) are stalkless, single at branch tips, ½ to 2+ inches long, 1 to 7 clustered at the top of plant and occasionally a few in lateral branches
Fruiting season: August - October
Height: 4-12 inches
Habitat: mixed and conifer forest, forest edges and openings, bog and swamp edges
