Leaves/stem: evergreen, leaves curved upward, ¼ inch long, linear white hair-like extension at tip that is half or more as long as blade, stems horizontal, running above ground, at regular intervals erect shoots emerge, each with 3 to 6 ascending to spreading branches, horizontal stems can reach 9 feet long
Spores: spike-like or cone-like structures (strobili), ½ to 1¼ inches long, 2 to 5 clustered at end of long stalk, each strobilus also distinctly stalked, cluster stalk up to 5 inches long
Fruiting season: July - October
Height: 4-10 inches
Habitat: deciduous, mixed or conifer forest, forest edges, meadows, bog edges
