• Fronds: Sterile frond a single leaf, triangular in outline, 4 to 10 inches long and wide, 3 or 4 times compound, each with up to 12 pairs of leaflets, leaflets thin, bright green, linear to narrowly lance-shaped, tapering to pointed tip, prominent midvein, deeply lobed, lobes shallowly lobed to coarsely toothed and blunt at the tip
• Spores: fertile frond a branched cluster, arises from base of leaf, central stalk appearing as a continuation of main stem, half to twice as long as sterile frond, covered in hundreds of pale yellowish-green, bead-like capsules that contain the spores
• Fruiting season: Summer
• Height: 6-18 inches
• Habitat: deciduous, conifer and mixed forest
