Leaves/stem: Evergreen, lateral leaves largest, horizontal stems above ground, erect shoots emerge at regular intervals, each with 2 or more branches near base, mostly ascending to spreading, forked and tree-like, not strongly arranged on the same plane, fan-like
Spores: spike-like or cone-like structures (strobili), 1 to 4 strobili clustered at tip of long stalk (peduncle). 1 or 2 peduncles rise up to 3½ inches
Fruiting season: July - October
Height: 3-16 inches
Habitat: conifer or mixed forest, thickets, rocky slopes, fields
