Endemic to Chile and south Argentina
Tall bird, 35-45 in lenght (largest living species of the genus Campephilus)
Southernmost example of the genus
Inhabits mature Nothofagus forests, where they feed mainly on wood-boring larvae and adult beetles, as well as spiders
Occasionally, other foods may supplement the diet, including sap and fruits, as well as small reptiles, bats, and the eggs and nestlings of passerines
