CAP 1 to 3 inches broad, convex to broadly umbonate, with persistently rounded margin, slimy, scarlet, reddish orange, or orange, fading to yellow, or often red or orange at center and yellow on margin; flesh thick, white to yellowish. ODOR and TASTE mild. GILLS decurrent, white or yellow. STEM 2 to 4 or 6 inches long, lower part slimy, becoming stained dull orange as the slime dries, upper part dry, silky, white or pale tawny or tinged yellow or orange.
