Description 3

CAP 1 to 3 inches broad, convex, purplish red from the first, often with darker spots at the center; flesh white to reddish. ODOR and TASTE not special. GILLS adnate then decurrent, at first pallid, becoming pinkish then reddish purple, well spaced. STEM 2-5 inches long, 3/8 to 1/2 inch thick, white, becoming reddish purple like the cap, but the top becoming paler. HABIT of associating with spruce. DV.

REMARKS Considered to be in H. russula species group. It can be distinguished from true Russulas, however, by its distant, soon-red gills, the fact that its surfaces do not bruise yellow,

SIMILAR H. purpurascens.
