INTRODUCTION

  • Highly Venomous Elapid
  • Common in NE India and South East Asia.
  • Some populations are moderately capable of spitting venom.
  • Neurotoxic Venom : Paralyzes muscles leading to respiratory and cardiac failure.

IDENTIFICATION

  • Distinctive Monocellate Hood Pattern that is raised when threatened.
  • Elliptical head, smooth and shiny scales with a wide range of color variations and banded forms.
  • Yellow, brown, reddish-brown and black dorsal color with usually contrasting cross bands.
  • Mottling is present just like the Indian Cobra.
  • Slightly heavy-bodied while also slender. Grow upto 4-5 feet in length.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT

  • Found north of Gangetic plains. Common above Orissa and Bengal. Very common in Northeast India.
  • Usually found in forests, agricultural lands and near human habitations due to abundance of rats.
  • Prefer close proximity to water and deep hiding places like Mammal burrows, Termite mounds, Tree Hollows and Rock Piles .

DIET AND BEHAVIOR

  • Preys on small mammals like rats, frogs, toads, eggs, fish and sometimes other snakes.
  • Primarily terrestrial but climb and swim well in search of prey.
  • Most active during early evening as dusk approaches.
  • Extremely alert and tend to shy away from human confrontation.
  • When threatened, they display hood and hiss loudly. Stay very focused on one threat.
  • Doesn't give mock bites like the Indian Cobra. Very aggressive and bites on first attack.
