INTRODUCTION

  • Non Venomous
  • Other names : Little Wart snake, Little File Snake.
  • Found across coastal India and most of Southeast Asia.
  • Completely aquatic and helpless on land.

IDENTIFICATION

  • Stout body similar in structure to sea snakes.
  • Has very thin and loose skin, rough in texture.
  • Usually gray with darker or black crossbands across body.
  • Small head with minute scales, small eyes with elliptical pupils and nostrils on upper snout
  • Have compressed tails for swimming but not as prominent as true sea snakes.
  • Grow to 3-4 feet on average.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT

  • Marine coasts of India.
  • Inhabit river estuaries, ponds, mangroves and in sea too.
  • Completely aquatic and found in shallow water & saltwater mud flats during low tides.

DIET AND BEHAVIOR

  • Feed on fish and crustaceans by constricting around them.
  • Very sluggish and helpless on land, become active underwater.
  • Nocturnal species and non-offensive.
