LEAVES – Needles slender and soft, in bunches of 5.
BARK – Smooth and dark green on young trees. Dark and rough with narrow cracks on old trees.
CONES – Long cylindrical cones (8-20 cm) on a short stalk. It takes two seasons for the cones to mature and open up to release the seeds.

The white pine is a beautiful tall conifer tree. It often grows to 30-40 meters tall, but could have reached the impressive height of 80-90 meters in pre-colonial times. White pine is one of the most important tree species for timber in Canada. It is found from eastern Manitoba to the Maritimes and is widely grown in plantation forestry in its native area. It grows fast and has a very soft wood (also called “soft pine”), which makes it easy to work with.
