Echium vulgare — known as viper's bugloss and blueweed — is a species of flowering plant in the borage family Boraginaceae. It is native to most of Europe, and western and central Asia and it occurs as an introduced species in north-eastern North America.

How to recognize it? 5

Purplish-blue funnel shaped flowers with long purple ‘tongues’. Entire plant is bristly with dark spots.

Native lookalike: Blue Beardstongue

When are they blooming in Banff National Park? Mid-June at the earliest. Full bloom usually between early to mid-July and mid-August. Bloom/seeding continuing on until mid-September.
