Common True Katydid

Pterophylla camellifolia

Identification 5

Oval wings are wider and less elongate than any other katydid species in Iowa. Wings also bulge outward in the center, cupping around the abdomen. Inner wings do not protrude beyond outer wings, though the ovipositor in females often protrudes from between the wings to the rear.

Song is loud and distinctive. The name "katydid" comes from this species' song.
