Straight-lanced Meadow Katydid

Conocephalus strictus

Identification 4

Wings usually short, but can occasionally be long like C. fasciatus. When short, wings are shorter than C. brevipennis. Male cerci are distinctive. Female ovipositor is longer than body. Females maybe most easily confused with C. saltans, but C. saltans has a shorter ovipositor, on average, and shorter wings. When in doubt, there are other characters in the key in Orthoptera of Michigan you can look for: prosternal spines and the number of apical spurs on the tibiae.
