House Cricket

Acheta domesticus

Identification 4

An introduced species that in Iowa may only survive in human habitation. Sold at the pet store as pet food. Note three dark bands across head - one between the antenna, one between the eyes, and one on top of the head. Neonemobius variegatus is somewhat similar. Could also be confused with the Japanese Burrowing Cricket.

Occurrence 4

Knutson and Jaques (1935) listed this species as occurring in Iowa. However, there are few records and it is not clear if there are any currently any resident breeding populations, or if sightings are escaped pet food. If there are, they don't seem to be aggressively invading new habitats. BugGuide has no records. iNat has a few records. SCAN shows 1 record.

Habitat 4

May be restricted to human buildings where it can survive the winter. In warmer climes, like southern California, survives outside year round.
