Admirable Grasshopper

Syrbula admirabilis

Identification 6

Slanted face and long legs. Males and females somewhat different. Males tend to be brownish with cream markings. Females tend to be green with noticeable wavy markings on wings.

Occurrence 6

Southern half of Iowa. Knutson (1937) reported it from 25 counties in southern Iowa and called it one of the more common species of southeastern Iowa, but they do not seem to be common anymore.

Habitat 6

Open fields, areas with dry grass. I found them common at Eddyville Sand Prairie Parks.
