Carolina Leafroller Cricket

Camptonotus carolinensis

Identification 4

A distinctive species difficult to confuse with any other species in Iowa. Very long antenna. Short upturned ovipositor sometimes folded over its back. Also has the unique behavior of sheltering in rolled up leaves.

Resources 4

Apparently not covered by SINA.

Capinera, J.L., R.D. Scott, and T.J. Walker. 2004. Field Guide to Grasshoppers, Katydids, and Crickets of the United States. Cornell University Press.

Occurrence 4

Iowa is at the northern limit for this species. Most likely to occur in southern or southeastern part of state.

Habitat 4

Deciduous woodland. Not clear at what height it is typically found, but I would guess at lower levels and not treetops.
