Identification 4

Color pattern is variable. From above, the center ridge (carina) on the head does not extend into a nub or projection on the forehead, as it does in T. arenosa and T. ornata. This is still a rather subtle character and requires good photos of the head from above. See the diagrams in Orthoptera of Michigan. Tettigidea has the pronotum that is creeping up onto the head. Paratettix has the lobed middle femur and fastigium not projecting forward between eyes.

Occurrence 4

Knutson (1937) reported Tetrix subulata (as Acrydium subulatum) from 3 northern counties: Dickinson, Winnebago, and Clayton. This is a species that occurs mostly north of Iowa.

Habitat 4

Sandy microhabitat on the edge of water bodies like rivers or ponds.
