Arphia sulphurea
Identification 4
This species is similar to the more commonly reported Autumn Yellow-winged Grasshopper (Arphia xanthoptera), but adults appear in the spring. Knutson (1937) reported that they peak in late May and June in Iowa. Similar to A. xanthoptera, the pronotum crest is uncut but the crest is significantly smaller. If identity is still in question, get a good photo of the hindwing.

Brown forms of Chortophaga viridifasciata (Green-striped Grasshopper) can seem similar, but they have different color wings and their eye is divided by a stripe into darker and lighter halves.
Occurrence 4
Knutson (1937) thought this species to occur in the eastern 2/3 of the state. Rangewide, occurs in the eastern U.S. from Iowa east.
Habitat 4
Open grassy or weedy areas.
