Identification 7

The appearance of this species is unique in Iowa. Color is often reddish or reddish brown, but can be dark brown to black. Body is 18-26 mm (0.7-1.0 in). The front tibia (shin) has a single spine that appears out of place (there are many spines on the back of the tibia). This spine is unique to this genus. Small nodules or bumps on top of each abdominal segment (toward the posterior of the segment) are also unique to this genus (this is the only species of the genus that occurs in Iowa).

Statewide. Ranges from Texas to Canada. Froeschner (1954) reported it from 23 counties and described it as common.

Habitat 7

Found in burrows of its own making or under cover objects. Nocturnal.
