Dusky-faced Meadow Katydid

Orchelimum campestre

Identification 3

A rarely reported species best identified by male cerci or by song. The face is mostly green with reddish splotches or markings. They usually lack the light median stripe on top of the head. For more details on identification, see Thomas and Alexander (1962), linked from SINA.

Occurrence 3

Presumably statewide, but I am aware of only 4 records. SINA has 3 records from Thomas and Alexander (1962) and iNaturalist has 1 observation. SCAN and BugGuide show no records. Thomas and Alexander (1962) did not consider it to be uncommon, so perhaps it is just under-reported.

Habitat 3

BugGuide indicates that this species occupies drier grassland. However, Orthoptera of Michigan states that they occur in wetland vegetation. I found a population in sedges and grass at the edge of pond. Thomas and Alexander (1962) state that in Michigan, they usually occur in swamps, often in vegetation over the water, such as emergent Rice Cut-grass.
