Identification 5
Compare photos of the male supra-anal plate to diagrams on SINA and pictures on BugGuide. The supra-anal plate is similar to S. curvicauda, but the lobes are more pointed ("pointed pistillata"). The wings are also broader than other Scudderia and with some practice you can identify it by wing shape.
According to Vickery and Kevan (1985), slow moving and clumsy in flight.

Statewide except perhaps southwest Iowa. This is a northern species and Iowa is the southern limit of their range.
Habitat 5
According to Vickery and Kevan (1985) and Blatchley (1920), seems to prefer bushes in damp locations. I found one attracted to lights in Ames.
