As with all Orchelimum, the male cerci are very helpful for identification. Additionally, in this species, the "posterior lateral sinus of the pronotum is poorly developed," meaning the rear edge of the pronotum isn't indented very far. See the diagram in Figure 22 of Orthopter of Michigan.

Statewide. Knutson and Jaques (1935) listed this species. SINA shows 8 records for Iowa. BugGuide has one record for Iowa, but iNaturalist has no records yet. Rangewide, this species occurs in a band across the northern U.S. and southern Canada.
