Neonemobius variegatus

Identification 2

See Eunemobius carolinus and Allonemobius fasciatus for more context on the difficult subfamily Nemobiinae. This species is somewhat similar to Allonemobius maculatus and maybe Acheta domesticus because of the mottled or variegated color pattern, but note the short curved ovipositor. It is also smaller than A. maculatus, with a body length of 6.4 to 9.4 mm (Blatchley 1920). Among the Nemobiinae, this species is relatively easy to identify if the ovipositor can be seen, but rarely reported perhaps because of its small size.

Song recordings may also be used to identify this species.

Occurrence 2

Statewide according to the SINA range map, but only one record for Iowa. SCAN, BugGuide, and iNat have no records for Iowa.

Habitat 2

Reported as gravelly or sandy stream banks at SINA. Blatchley (1920) reported it from grassy stream banks and fence rows near open woods.
