American Bird Grasshopper

Identification 4

Brown with lateral spotting on wings. Whitish markings on pronotum, head, and wings stand out. The other species of Bird Grasshopper have a more pronounced dorsal stripe and no spots on the wings. This species is a strong flier than often flies into large shrubs or lower branches of trees when flushed.

Occurrence 4

Knutson (1937) reported this species from 11 counties in the southern third of Iowa, but reported that it was never seen in large numbers. This species has been reported in 2012 in BugGuide, but has not been reported in iNaturalist yet.

Habitat 4

Fields and open oak and pine woodlands. A strong flier that disperses widely under certain conditions. It is not clear if Iowa specimens are from resident populations or just dispersing individuals.
