American Mink

Neogale vison

ID Notes 4

The American Mink, Neogale vison, is a long, slender mammal with a brown body and white chin. White patches may also be seen on the throat. Monk are most commonly confused with other members of the weasel family (Mustelidae), which in WNY include fishers, river otters, long-tailed weasels, and stoat (also called ermine or shot-tailed weasels). Size is the most obvious way to differentiate mink from fisher, as fisher will be much larger. River otters are even larder and have webbed toes and a tail that is thick at the base and tapers toward the tip. The long-tailed weasel and stoat are smaller than mink, and have white or yellowish fur on the belly.
