White-tailed Deer

Odocoileus virginianus

ID Notes 4

The White-tailed Deer, Odocoileus virginianus, is our only native ungulate in Western New York. Deer are easily identified on camera. During much of the year, males can be identified by their antlers. However, they shed the antlers in the winter and begin to regrow them in spring. In our database, you will only need to tag whether deer are antlered, anterless, or young. Young deer (fawns) can be identified by their white spots, which they gradually lose after a few months.
