The Short-eared Owl, Asio flammeus, is a smaller species of owl than the Barred or Great Horned Owl. They are larger than the Eastern Screech Owl. Short-eared Owls and named for their small ear tufts, which may or may not be visible. The short-eared Owl will display its tufts when in a defensive pose, but these very short tufts are usually not visible. The short-eared owl is found in open country and grasslands, and typically is only found in Western NY during the winter. This species is a rare capture on our trail cameras.
