Red-tailed Hawk

Buteo jamaicensis

ID Notes 7

The Red-tailed hawk, Buteo jamaicensis, is the most common bird of prey in Western New York. Red-tails are large, heavy-bodied hawks with broad wings. Characteristic features include the bird's rusty red tail, dark patagial markings (the strip of skin on the leading edge of the wing from the head to the wrist), and the "belly band" - a band of streaky brown markings extending across the belly area. Red-tails are generally brown in color above, and pale on the underside. Their tail is shorter than the tail of a Cooper's or Sharp-shinned Hawk.
