Northern Cardinal

Cardinalis cardinalis

ID Notes 6

The Northern Cardinal, Cardinalis cardinalis, is a common bird throughout Western New York. They are slightly smaller than an American Robin, and have a long tail, short, thick bill, and prominent crest. Males are very distinctive, with a bright red color all over, and a black mask that surrounds the bill and extends slightly over the eyes. Females are more drab, having a pale brown color overall, with reddish or orangish tinge to the wings, tail, and crest. Like males, they have black around the bill, which is reddish-orange in color.
