Mallard

Anas platyrhynchos

ID Notes 7

The Mallard, Anas platyrhynchos, is a very common duck in Western New York. Mallards are "dabbling ducks," which feed at the surface of the water and can often been seen with their heads below water and their rear ends upward. Mallards are large ducks with hefty bodies, rounded heads, and wide, flat bills. They are considerably smaller than the Canada Goose. In flight their wings are broad and set back toward the rear. Males have a dark, iridescent-green head and bright yellow bill. They have a gray, brown breast, and black rear. Females and juveniles are mottled brown with orange-and-brown bills. Both sexes have a white-bordered, blue “speculum” on the wing - a bright iridescent patch on the secondary flight feathers (on the part of the wing near the body). The speculum is not always visible. Rather, it can typically be seen when the wing is spread during flight or when the bird is stretching, preening, or landing.
