Rock Pigeon

Columba livia

ID Notes 6

The Rock Pigeon, Columba livia, is not native to New York. The species was introduced from Europe, possibly as early as the 1600s. They are larger than a morning dove, with a plumper body. They can be variable in color, but most are bluish gray (but some are more brown in color), with two black bands on the wing and a black tail tip. Many pigeons have iridescent feathers on the throat, which can appear greenish or purplish depending on the lighting. Wing patterns are variable, and can include dark spotting instead of the common black bars. In some birds, the wings are plain (no barring or spotting)
