The Great Blue Heron, Ardea herodias, is a large wading bird that is quite common in Western New York. This species is quite distinct from other local herons, with a slender body, very long legs, a long slender neck, and long pointed bill. They are similar in size and shape to the Great Egret, but are easily distinguished from that species by color (Great Egrets are white). Great Blue Herons appear bluish gray in color, with a wide black stripe above the eye. In flight, the upper side of the wing is two-toned: pale on the forewing and darker on the flight feathers. Their neck is often tucked into an "S" shape while flying.
