Wild Turkey

Meleagris gallopavo

ID Notes 8

The Wild Turkey, Meleagris gallopavo, is an upland ground bird common in Western New York. Turkeys are large, heavy-bodied birds with long legs, wide, rounded tails, and a small head on a long, thin neck. Turkeys are dark in color overall, with a bronze or greenish iridescence to most of their plumage. Their wings are dark and barred with white. Their rump and tail feathers are tipped with rusty brown or white. The head and neck lack feathers, and the skin color on these areas varies from red to blue to gray. Contrary to what people often believe, turkeys are able to fly.
