The Northern Flicker, Colaptes auratus, is also sometimes called the "Yellow-shafted Flicker" for the bright yellow coloring of the undersides of the wing and tail feathers. The Flicker is a medium-sized woodpecker with an elaborate color pattern. They appear brownish overall with a white rump patch that’s conspicuous in flight and often visible when perched, and their body is patterned with black spots, bars, and crescents.
