Green Heron

Butorides virescens

ID Notes 6

The Green Heron, Butorides virescens, is a small heron common to the Western new York area. Compared with the Great Blue Heron or Great Egret, Green Herons are short and stocky, with relatively short legs and thick necks that are often drawn up against their bodies. They have broad, rounded wings and a long, daggerlike bill. They sometimes raise their crown feathers into a short crest. Green Herons have a deep green color on the back with a chestnut brown breast and neck, and their wings are dark gray. In poor lighting they may appear as if they are uniformly dark. Juveniles are browner, with pale streaking on the neck and spots on the wings.
