The Common Snapping Turtle, Chelydra serpentina, is one of the most common freshwater turtles in Western New York. They range in size from 8 to 14 in (20-36 cm) with a record length of 19.3 in (49 cm). Their color varies from tan to dark brown to almost black. They have long tails and necks and rough shells with three rows of carapace keels. On camera, they may be seen basing on logs or on the bank near the edge of the water in locations with ponds, streams, and wetlands.
