The Red-breasted Nuthatch, Sitta canadensis, is a small songbird, similar in size to a sparrow. They have short tails and appear to have little neck. They have blue-grey upperparts with cinnamon underparts, a white throat and face with a black stripe through the eyes, a straight grey bill and a black crown. Females are slightly paler in color than males. It is most commonly confused with the White-breasted Nuthatch.
