The Black-crowned Night Heron, Nycticorax nycticorax, is one of several species of large wading birds present in Western New York.
Although less common than the others listed in this guide, they are seen regularly. Black-crowned Night-Herons are relatively small herons with a squat, chunky appearance. They have thick necks, large, flat heads, and heavy, pointed bills. The legs are short and, in flight, barely reach the end of the tail. Their wings are broad and rounded. Adults are light gray in color with a black back and black crown. Immature birds are brown with white spots on the wings and streaks on the underparts. Adults have all-black bills. The bills of immature birds are black and yellow.
