The House Sparrow, Passer domesticus, was introduced from Europe and is common in urban and suburban areas. They appear chunkier than most of our native sparrows. They have a large, rounded head, short tail, and short, heavy bill. Males are distinctive, with a brown back streaked with black, grayish underparts, a gray crown, white cheeks, and a black bib on the throat extending down to the upper breast. Females are drab, with a plain buffy brown above, marked with darker streaks, and a grayish color below.
