The American goldfinch, Spinus tristis, is a small finch that is common in Western New York. They have a short, conical bill, small head, long wings, and short, notched tail. Their appearance changes throughout the year, with males in particular exhibiting bright yellow coloration during the breeding season. Adult males in spring and early summer are bright yellow with a black forehead, black wings with white markings, and white patches above and beneath the tail. Adult females are duller yellow below, and an olive color above. In winter, birds of both sexes are a drab, unstreaked brown, with blackish wings and two pale wingbars.
