The Red-winged Blackbird, Agelaius phoeniceus, is similar in size to a Robin. They have a slender, conical bill and a medium-length tail. Male Red-winged Blackbirds are very distinctive, with a glossy black color overall, and bright yellow and red shoulder badges called epaulettes. Females are drab and sparrow-like. They are dark brownish overall with heavy black streaking, and often show a white eyebrow.
