The Ring-necked Pheasant, Phasianus colchicus, is a game bird that is not Native to New York. It was introduced in the late 1800s. Pheasants are uncommon, but occasionally seen, in Western New York. Pheasants are large, chicken-like birds. They have fairly long legs, a small head, long neck, plump body, and long, pointed tail. Male Ring-necked Pheasants are brightly-colored birds with a red face, and an iridescent green neck with a bold white ring. The male’s very long tail is coppery brown with thin, black bars. Females are brown, with paler scaling on the upperparts, which are buffy or cinnamon color with black spotting on the sides. Females have thin, black bars on their tails.
