Broad-winged Hawk

Buteo platypterus

ID Notes 6

The Broad-winged hawk, Buteo platypterus, is a small hawk of the genus Buteo (a group of heavy-bodies hawks that also includes the Red-tailed Hawk). Broad-winged Hawks are most commonly seen during migration, when they travel in large numbers. Broad-winged hawks are characterized by broad wings that taper to a point at the tip during flight. They have a brown back, and may be dark below, or have a pale underside with brown barring. They have a distinct tail pattern with bold black and white bands. The Broad-winged Hawk is smaller than the Red-tailed Hawk.
