Round birdies that are often in small flocks pecking in the short grass at the side of trails in winter, especially along the coast and bayshore. Only the adults have the bright white & black striped crowns. The immature birds have grey & brown striped crowns.

Often hanging out with Golden-crowned Sparrows, the immature birds of which look pretty similar but have grey beaks instead of yellow.
